A New Latin Inscription from Gavignano

Jeff Becker just drew my attention to this announcement on Archeoblog:

PAVLAE HORDEONIAE L F
NASONIS

The article provides a rather full account of the find and its general context.

One Response to A New Latin Inscription from Gavignano

  1. Mika Kajava says:

This is nice news. – In another operation more than 20 years ago (surely “meno brillante” than the one of the GF), I had the opportunity to study the inscription which comes from the territory of ancient Signia. Here are some details (taken from the future 2nd ed. of CIL X):
Epistylium marmoreum, in fronte regula cinctum, a sinistra mutilum, superne fortasse aliorum usuum gratia ruditer sculptum. In plano summo duo foramina ad epistylium retinendum exstant. Puncta triangularia. 43,5 x (187,5) x 52; litt. 6-7 (v. 1), 7-7,5 (v. 2).

    Paulae Hordeoniae L(uci) f(iliae)
    Nasonis.

    M. KAJAVA, in Epigrafia. Actes Degrassi 379-380 cum im. phot. tab. XXXVI fig. 1 (AE 1991, 419).
-The piece is well known in subsequent scholarship.
