Epigraphy in MBooks

Filed under: mbooks — Tom Elliott @ 17:06

The University of Michigan has just announced the digitization of the “millionth” book in their collaborative project with Google. I wondered: what epigraphic works have they scanned to date that are also available in full text. And so begins a series of blog posts where we explore the results of the following library catalog queries at the University of Michigan:

  • W-subjects= inscriptions AND W-subjects= latin and W-Type= CF | CE
  • W-subjects= inscriptions AND W-subjects= greek and W-Type= CF | CE

Only results providing full-text access will be presented. All articles in this series will be tagged into the mbooks category.

Three rare journals/monograph series

Three more publications that are unavailable (especially in the U.S.), and have recently carried some epigraphical content:

Five volumes of this journal published by the Istanbul museum now exist, but in the U.S. only two libraries carry it, and they only appear to have the first two volumes.  Apparently devoted to art and antiquities.
Title:  Palmet - Sadberk Hanım Müzesi Yıllığı
Publisher:  İstanbul: Sadberk Hanım Müzesi: 1997
OCLC:  46426349

This journal, which despite the title does run epigraphical articles, is not even in Worldcat (though two related book volumes are):
Title:  Kentron:  Revue du Monde antique et de psychologie historique
Publisher:  Presses universitaires de Caen
ISSN:  0765-0590
Webpage at which the table of contents for recent volumes are available (small, red link):  http://www.unicaen.fr/services/puc/rubrique.php3?id_rubrique=58

Also, this appears to be an irregular monograph series.  Worldcat shows that the recent volumes that have proper book titles and editors/authors were picked up by libraries (vols. 5, 7), but the ones that simply bear the series title were not (vols. 3, 6).
Title:  Daidalos:  studi e ricerche del Dipartimento di Scienze del Mondo Antico
Publisher:  Viterbo Univ. degli Studi della Tuscia
Distributed by L’Erma di Bretschneider:  http://www.lerma.it/D_Editore.asp?ID=24517

Das Heiligtum für Isis und Mater Magna: Texte und Bilder

Worldcat reveals this book, the source of AE 2004, 1014-1025, to be unavailable in research libraries outside of Germany:

Author: Witteyer, Marion
Title: Das Heiligtum für Isis und Mater Magna: Texte und Bilder
Published: Mainz am Rhein: Von Zabern: 2004
OCLC: 76510825
ISBN: 3805334370, 9783805334372

As with the books listed below, and others that we will start listing in this space as “Rare Publications,” it would be to our collective benefit for some of us to get our libraries to acquire such overlooked volumes.

CLARIFICATION:  If you poke around in Worldcat you will find other books by this author about the sanctuary, but these appear to be guides for tourists who visit the site, not the archaeological publication that includes an epigraphical section.

Ficheiro Epigrafico CD-ROM

Not a rare book, or even a book, but Worldcat shows no sign of any library having the Ficheiro Epigrafico CD-ROM produced by José d’Encarnação and Joaquín L. Gómez-Pantoja, which includes in .pdf format issues 1-66 (1982-2001) as well as new and revised indexes and a concordance with AE, CIL II, and HEp.

Available for purchase from Dr. Encarnação. Information is at http://www1.ci.uc.pt/iauc/pub/fe.html.

Journal: Gephyra

Chuck Jones writes to alert us to a newish, epigraphy-heavy journal that may have escaped the notice of many. Chuck notes that the journal has no ISSN, and each of the three volumes so far produced has been assigned its own ISBN:

  • Gephyra.

Harrassowitz can supply it to libraries on subscription.

Indeed, Worldcat shows only one set in a library outside Turkey (DePauw).

New publication: Canali de Rossi, Filius Publicus

Filed under: publications — Gabriel Bodard @ 17:32

Just appeared from Herder Editrice (though not yet in the online catalogue), this epigraphic title:

Canali De Rossi, Filippo, Filius publicus. υἱὸς τῆς πόλεως e titoli affini in iscrizioni greche di età imperiale. Studi sul vocabolario dell’evergesia – I. Roma: Herder Editrice e Libreria, 2007. Pp. XI + 275. EUR. 40. ISBN 978-88-89670-24-8.

Described by the author as follows:

Edit 28.4.2008 by Mathieu Carbon:
There is now a review at BMCR 2008.04.37 (in Italian). The reviewer, G. Squillace, helpfully summarizes the contents but hardly offers any critical evaluation of the book (other than its format and layout).

Eidenow: Oracles, Curses and Risk Among the Ancient Greeks

Filed under: publications — Gabriel Bodard @ 14:21

A very promising new title just spotted in the OUP catalogue:

Esther Eidinow

Oracles, Curses, and Risk Among the Ancient Greeks.

ISBN 978-0-19-927778-0.

Pp. 480.

£80.00 (hardback).

I haven’t had a chance to look at this yet, but according the the press release it includes, in addition to a detailed study of magical practices and the mentality of risk, a catalogue of oracle tablets from Dodona and of 159 curse tablets discussed. (We can only hope that OUP get around to releasing a paperback!)

Revised indices to McLean’s Inscriptions from Konya Museum

Filed under: publications — Gabriel Bodard @ 11:27

An announcement from Stefan Krmnicek:

I would like to announce an article relating to Greek and Roman epigraphy which has been published in the latest issue of the open access online-journal FeRA (Frankfurter elektronische Rundschau zur Altertumskunde / Frankfurt electronic Review of Antiquity):

P. Probst, Überarbeiteter Index zu Personen-, Orts- und Götternamen (Indices 1, 2 und 3) der Edition der Inschriften aus dem Archäologischen Museum von Konya

The article contains a revised version of the indexes to personal names (Index 1), names of places (Index 2) and names of gods (Index 3) of the Inscriptions from the Konya Archaeological Museum published by B. H. McLean in 2002. The article is free for download via the website www.fera-journal.eu and may be used as an additional instrument to the publication of the inscriptions.
