The Department of Scienze Storiche, Giuridiche, Economiche e Sociali of University Mediterranea of Reggio Calabria and the Department Diritto dell’Organizzazione Pubblica, Economia e Società of University Magna Graecia of Catanzaro, within BILG (Inscriptiones Graecae et Latinae Bruttiorum) project, is organising an intensive training workshop of EpiDoc, with Monica Berti (Tufts University – Roma Tor Vergata), Lou Burnard (TEI Editor) and Marion Lamè (Università di Bologna).

This workshop is an introduction to the use of TEI and of EpiDoc, XML schema for the encoding and publication of literary texts and inscriptions, papyri and other documentary classical texts respectively. Participants will study the use of EpiDoc markup to record the distinctions expressed by the Leiden Conventions and traditional critical editions, and some of the issues in translating between EpiDoc and the major epigraphic and papyrological databases. The course is targeted at scholars of historical and ancient texts, epigraphic and papyrologic ones (from advanced graduate students to professors), that are interested and want to learn some of the hands-on technical aspects in the markup, encoding, and exploitation of digital editions.

The course will give a practical introduction to the Text Encoding Initiative, an introduction to EpiDoc markup and editing tools, and the text transformations with XSLT.

Knowledge of Greek and/or Latin, the Leiden  Conventions, the distinctions expressed by them and the kinds of data that need to be recorded by epigraphic scholars and ancient historians are of  course essential. The course will be held in English with Italian tutors. No particular computer skills and technical expertise are required, even if the possession of an interest for computer know-how is preferable.

British School at Rome Postgraduate course in Epigraphy July 16th-24th 2012

As you may know, the great success and popularity of the Epigraphy training course at the British School at Athens has prompted efforts to establish a similar course in Roman Epigraphy at the British School in Rome (which will run in alternate years to its sister course at the BSA). I am pleased to announce that the first Roman Epigraphy summer programme will run this July 16th-24th at the British School in Rome.

The 9 day intensive course, intended for postgraduate scholars of ancient history, archaeology, and the classics, is designed to provide training and practical experience in the use of epigraphy as a source. The course will examine the numerous contexts in which epigraphy is presented (in situ, museums, archives and published formats (including online catalogues) exploring the process of editing and publishing epigraphic materials. The course, divided into themes of a technical and cultural nature, will consist of daily epigraphic ambulatio throughout the city of Rome, museums visits, a trip to Ostia, as well as research sessions at the British School’s library and Guest lectures on various topics from scholars regarding ongoing research projects.

They will also be given hands-on experience in the use of the Papyrological Editor tool implemented by the Duke Databank of Documentary Papyri, which facilitates the authoring EpiDoc XML via a ‘tags-free’ interface.

The course is targeted at scholars of epigraphy and papyrology (from advanced graduate students to professors) with an interest and willingness to learn some of the hands-on technical aspects necessary to run a digital project. Knowledge of Greek and/or Latin, the Leiden Conventions and the distinctions expressed by them, and the kinds of data that need to be recorded by philologists and ancient historians, will be assumed. No particular technical expertise is required.

Course fees will be in the region of £70 – £90 but, as in previous years, we hope to be able to offer a number of generous bursaries. Die internationale Akademie richtet sich an fortgeschrittene Studierende (in der Regel nach der ersten Zwischenprüfung) sowie an Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden der Alten Geschichte und der benachbarten altertumswissenschaftlichen und historischen Fächer. Sie soll der Vertiefung der Kompetenzen von Nachwuchswissenschaftlern in der lateinischen Epigraphik dienen.

Aus dem Programm: Praktische Arbeiten an Inschriften im Museo Nazionale Romano und auf dem Forum Romanum, Epigraphische Spaziergänge durch Rom, Vorstellung großer Inschriftenprojekte, Diskussion über aktuelle Fragestellungen zum epigraphic habit und zur Funktion von Inschriften in der politischen Kommunikation, Besuch von Ostia etc. Ein detailliertes Programm der Veranstaltung (mit Themenliste für Referate) wird den Teilnehmern rechtzeitig zugestellt. Anreisetag ist Donnerstag, der 21. Juli 2011; Abreisetag Sonntag, der 31. Juli 2011.

A Practical Epigraphy Workshop is taking place for those who are interested in developing hands-on skills in working with epigraphic material (Greek and Latin). The workshop is aimed at lecturers in post and postdoctoral status academics in UK HE institutions, whether or not they have previous experience of epigraphy. With expert tuition provided by members of the British Epigraphy Society, participants will learn the practical aspects of how to record and study inscriptions. The programme will include the making of squeezes; photographing and recording inscribed stones; reading and transcribing squeezes; and the production of editions (transcriptions, lemmata, translations and commentaries).

The workshop will take place in Oxford and be based in the Classics Centre, with the support of the Centre for the Study of Ancient Documents (Classics Faculty, University of Oxford), and work with the epigraphical collection in the recently re-opened Ashmolean Museum (Department of Antiquities).

The workshop will start on Tuesday 12th April 2011 at 14.00 and run until 14.00 Thursday 14th April; there will be two early evening talks on the Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Workshop will provide lunches on Wednesday and Thursday; an evening meal Tuesday for all those involved in the Workshop; bed and breakfast accommodation at St John’s College; and the materials required to complete the workshop.

The Workshop is supported by the Classics Subject Centre. The cost of the workshop for participants (to include accommodation and meals) is £50. Those who would otherwise be prevented from attending by the cost should mention this in their application, as bursaries may be available.

Those interested in taking part should write to Sarah Francis (classhea@liverpool.ac.uk) at the Classics Subject Centre explaining briefly how participation in the Workshop will enhance the applicant’s teaching and research profile and how experience on this workshop might enable the Higher Education environment in which the participant is operating to develop the teaching of epigraphy. Participants may choose to work on Latin or Greek texts and should state their preference.

The 2011 Latium Vetus Program, as part of a collaborative project between Tufts University and Roma Tor Vergata, will allow students to learn the techniques of modern epigraphic study, including digital transcription and documentation of inscriptions, and they will have the unique opportunity to work on unpublished texts from the huge corpus of inscriptions of Ancient Latium and to contribute to the ongoing project of digitizing and publishing these inscriptions.

As an intensive course of first-hand epigraphic and archaeological site and museum study based at the campus of Tor Vergata University and led by Monica Berti of Roma Tor Vergata and J. Matthew Harrington of Tufts University, this program will combine close study of epigraphic remains with exploration of the archaeological contexts and analysis of relevant Latin sources from the sites of Latium and Campania: Rome, Ostia, Pompeii, Tivoli, Praeneste, Veii, Lanuvium, Albano Laziale, Cerveteri, Herculaneum, Nemi, Anzio, Tusculum, Falerii Novi, Sutri, Tarquinia, Napoli, Paestum, Lucus Feroniae, Boscoreale, Oplontis, and more.

Whether publishing new inscriptions, reinterpreting old ones, or critically analysing editions, this course provides training for historians, archaeologists and textual scholars alike in the discipline of reading and interpreting epigraphic evidence. Students will be guided through the process of producing editions of inscriptions, gaining practical first hand experience with the stones as well as instruction in editorial and bibliographic skills. Guest lectures on historical and thematic subjects will explore the ways in which epigraphic evidence can inform a wide range of Classical subjects. The course will be taught at the BSA and will utilise the most significant epigraphic collections around Athens, where students will be assigned a stone from which they will create a textual edition. The importance of seeing inscriptions within their archaeological and topographical contexts will be explored during site visits around Athens, Attica, and Delphi. Some prior knowledge of Greek is essential, although students with only elementary skills are advised that reading inscriptions is a very good way to advance in the language!

The course fee of £700 includes accommodation in shared rooms at the BSA, where self catering facilities are available, as well as 24 hour access to the superb library, entry to all sites and museums, and BSA membership for one month. Free membership for the remainder of the session will be offered to students wishing to remain at the BSA after the course to continue their research. Travel to and from Greece is the sole responsibility of the course participant.

The course is limited to 12 places, and open to students of any university pursuing Masters or Post-graduate degrees. Students are recommended to apply to their universities for financial support; a number of BSA-administered bursaries are available for students who would otherwise be unable to attend.

From the workshop description:

This course will introduce attendees to EpiDoc markup, an XML schema for epigraphic and papyrological editions. The workshop is targeted at Classical scholars: we shall assume knowledge of Greek and/or Latin and some experience in Classical history or adjacent disciplines, but no technical expertise is required. We shall introduce students to the use of EpiDoc markup to record the distinctions expressed by the Leiden Conventions and traditional critical editions, and some of the issues in translating between EpiDoc and the major epigraphic and papyrological databases.

Students will also be given hands-on experience in the use of the “Son of SOL” editing tool (SoSOL), currently implemented by the Duke Databank of Documentary Papyri, which facilitates the creation of validating EpiDoc XML via a “tags-free” interface. EpiDoc is a standard for the encoding of ancient texts, originally drawn up by and for epigraphic projects (the Inscriptions of Aphrodisias, Vindolanda Tablets, US Epigraphy, and others). While the SoSOL tool is currently operational on a papyrological dataset, training in its use is directly applicable to the epigraphic community. For one thing, SoSOL is already being modified for use by epigraphical projects, but more importantly, it functions at a level of abstraction that invites the user to think not in terms of papyrological or epigraphic conventions for displaying, e.g. orthographic variants, but rather in terms of the underlying semantic meaning. In other words, the tool furnishes, in addition to its practical applications, a pedagogical bridge between the print page, with which students are still conditioned to think, and the full sophistication and explicitness of EpiDoc markup.
